Promoting Health in a Smoking World - A Bright Futures Framework to Address Tobacco Use

Smoking trends reinforce the urgency for pediatric and family physicians to address the issue of smoking among youths and their families during the primary care visit. This module applies the Bright Futures concepts to smoking cessation and prevention counseling, with a particular focus on young and adolescent females.

Objectives: After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Articulate a Bright-Futures definition of health and how it provides a framework for effective smoking prevention and cessation practice
  • Explain the status of adolescent female health, the prevalence of smoking among this population and the impact of nicotine on their health
  • Describe how adolescent female health depends on the health of their families and communities
  • Discuss the importance of acknowledging the strengths of the child, family, and community as partners in health and smoking prevention and cessation
  • Identify the child's, family's, and health professional's concerns or agendas during a health visit

Length: This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
