Communicating Prevention and Cessation Messages - Effective Counseling Strategies

This module provides an overview of effective smoking prevention and cessation counseling strategies for early adolescent female patients using Bright Futures family-centered communication during the health care encounter.

Objectives: After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the rationale for effective family-centered smoking prevention and cessation counseling during the office visit.
  • Describe the components of family-centered communication and how to foster them using the 5 A's strategy.
  • Integrate cultural attributes in conveying counseling messages.
  • Apply Bright Futures communication strategies, including active listening, eliciting the needs and concerns of children and families, providing individual guidance, and utilizing family-centered skills during counseling sessions.

Length: This module will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
